Estonia has reported that a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone, which authorities suspect was a Ukrainian projectile diverted from its path by Russian electronic jamming, over the country's airspace. The incident occurred when a Romanian F-16 fighter, engaged in NATO's Baltic air policing, fired a missile at the drone, with remnants landing in a marshy area close to central Estonia on Tuesday.

In a press conference, Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that the drone was identified as a potential threat even before entering Estonia's territory, and it was tracked until the fighter jet intervened. No damage was reported, and the drone reportedly crashed in a forest nearly 30 meters from the nearest residential building.

Ukraine's response included accusations against Russia for orchestrating the situation to redirect its drones towards NATO member states. Ukrainian officials expressed regret to Estonia and other Baltic countries for the unintended incident, emphasizing their ongoing struggles against Russian electronic disruptions.

This incident is the latest amid growing tensions in the region, where drone incursions have raised alarms among NATO members Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Just last week, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned due to a political crisis surrounding unauthorized drone activity within its borders, following reports of similar incursions into Latvian territory.

Moscow has denied allegations made by NATO and Ukraine, and the situation remains tense as concerns continue regarding potential Russian provocations aimed at testing the alliance's resolve. The drone incidents come on the heels of intensified Ukrainian drone and missile attacks targeting infrastructure within Russia, reflecting the ongoing hostilities since the invasion began in 2022.
