President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the failure of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to visit Kyiv, referring to their visits to Moscow as 'disrespectful.' The criticism highlighted the ongoing complexities in peace negotiations as the conflict continues in Ukraine. Despite Witkoff's eight official visits to Moscow, neither he nor Kushner has made it to the Ukrainian capital in an official capacity.

Zelensky expressed his disappointment in an interview, commenting, 'It's disrespectful [for them] to come to Moscow and not Kyiv, it's just disrespectful.' He acknowledged the difficulties in logistics but suggested the possibility of meeting elsewhere if necessary.

The US envoys have been part of extensive discussions regarding a ceasefire in the Ukraine war, which has lasted over four years and sees continued military engagement along the front lines. The last trilateral summit involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine was held in February, preceding escalated conflicts in the Middle East that shifted US attention away from Ukraine.

Notably, the ongoing negotiations have not yet yielded substantial progress, particularly concerning vital issues such as the status of the Donbas region and the resolution of past grievances, including the return of deported Ukrainian children. Zelensky reiterated the importance of US support and maintained hope for continued cooperation amid these challenges. He remarked, 'But... in any case, for us it is important to continue cooperating with the Americans.'

As ceasefire discussions gained momentum in recent months, external factors have complicated the situation. While Ukraine remains focused on restoring peace, the US’s engagement in the Middle Eastern crises, such as the war with Iran, poses a challenge to the attention that could potentially be directed towards Ukraine's urgent needs.
