Sudan's army has denied its involvement in a deadly attack on el-Daein Teaching Hospital on Friday night, where 64 people, including 13 children, were killed during the Eid celebrations. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who control the area, claimed that an army drone targeted the hospital in the East Darfur state's capital.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the incident, with its head, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressing condemnation and urgency for the ongoing conflict to cease, stating, Enough blood has been spilled. The attack further detaches vital medical facilities from functioning, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis that has arisen since the civil war's outburst in April 2023.
This war has claimed over 150,000 lives and displaced approximately 12 million people, overwhelming the already strained resources in Sudan. Health care facilities have frequently been targeted, with 213 confirmed attacks resulting in 2,036 deaths since the conflict's escalation.
The RSF has reported significant damage to the hospital, including the destruction of the top floor and vital medical instruments, while the army has urged for an independent investigation into the accusations made against them.
As the conflict rages on, it is deemed one of the deadliest for civilians in Africa despite international efforts to mediate peace.
