German Broadcaster Removes Intro After Elon Musk Lawsuit

ZDF said it had withdrawn a section of a live TV report that said Musk had called for migrants to be hunted, a claim that came after a brutal knife attack in Belfast in May 2026. The broadcaster admitted the wording was "misleading" and issued a correction before removing the entire introduction.

The original intro, found in the program ZDFheute Live, suggested that Musk had urged rebels to target migrants following a violent incident in Northern Ireland. A post by Musk on X claimed that the call came from a far‑right extremist, but Musk denied any such statement and announced that legal action would be pursued.

After the Belfast attack – where a Sudanese man was arrested on a charge of attempted murder – homes and cars were set alight, the situation escalated to public unrest. The incident received broad international attention, sparking scrutiny of how social‑media platforms can amplify hateful narratives.

ZDF’s spokesperson said the broadcaster had issued a “cease and desist” letter through a German law firm and subsequently removed the passage. They added a transparency notice, noting that the wording was “imprecise and misleading.” The corrected statement clarified that it was a far‑right activist, not Musk, who had called for protests, and that the post was shared by Musk.

Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and SpaceX, has faced accusations of spreading misinformation and inflaming tensions through his large following of over 240 million on X. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also criticized Musk for supposedly stirring division amid a tragic murder case in Southampton.

A U.S.‑based Centre for Countering Digital Hate noted that social media played a significant role in the Belfast incident, suggesting that Musk amplified anti‑migrant arguments that were already present.

The removal of the introduction by ZDF underscores the importance of accurate, responsible journalism, especially when reporting on issues that intersect with public sentiment, migration, and broader political climate. As media platforms continue to shape narratives, the need to verify facts and maintain integrity remains critical for sustainable civic dialogue and climate‑related policy discussions.
