At least five people have been killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine, after a massive overnight aerial bombardment targeted several regions across the country.

A 61-year-old woman was killed when a drone hit an electric train in Kharkiv early on Tuesday, authorities said, while other deaths were reported in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Poltava.

Officials stated these attacks were among the worst in the last ten days and occurred mere hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a forthcoming 'massive strike' during his evening address.

Russian strikes aimed at energy infrastructure also disrupted Moldova's key power link with Europe, according to President Maia Sandu, who noted that the situation remains 'fragile.'

Sirens echoed across Ukraine on Monday night as Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles and drones. Reports indicated the attack involved seven ballistic missiles, 23 cruise missiles, four air-launched guided missiles, and 392 drones. Air defense units managed to intercept 25 missiles and 365 drones.

In a statement on X, Zelensky asserted, 'These numbers clearly show that more protection is needed to save lives from Russian strikes. It is crucial to continue supporting Ukraine.'

Such large-scale attacks have been increasingly common, with fears of further escalations heightening ahead of the recent violence. This time, tactical targets included cities beyond the capital, Kyiv, impacting eleven regions according to Zelensky.

Zaporizhzhia was notably affected, with reports indicating that six drones followed by six ballistic missiles targeted the city, resulting in one death and nine injuries including serious damage to residential buildings.

Residents shared harrowing accounts of their experiences during the attack, with one local stating that they were forced to evacuate their home amid flames and chaos.

In addition, civilian casualties continued across various regions, with reports of attacks resulting in further injuries and damages from shelling in areas like Poltava and Kherson.

Moldova's government condemned the strikes on their energy infrastructure, emphasizing that such actions jeopardize regional energy security and civilian infrastructure. President Sandu remarked that while alternative routes are in place for energy imports, the circumstances remain precarious.

This assault from Russia coincides with a slowdown in their military advances in eastern Ukraine, with reports suggesting Ukrainian forces are conducting minor counteroffensives.

In a broader context, President Zelensky warned that Russia might leverage the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to intensify destruction in Ukraine, highlighting concerns over the depleting air-defense resources essential for Ukraine's protection.

While discussions between Ukrainian and US officials have been ongoing, the primary focus has shifted significantly towards various global conflicts, further complicating the situation in Ukraine.
