The leaders of Israel and Lebanon have agreed on a ten-day ceasefire from 5 PM EST (21:00 GMT; midnight local time), as announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement is aimed at halting the intense fighting that has persisted for the past six weeks between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group acting in Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed Israel's participation in this ceasefire, while emphasizing that Israeli troops will maintain a 10-kilometer (approximately 6.2 miles) security zone in southern Lebanon. He stated, We are there, and we are not leaving. This stance raises concerns about the long-term intentions of Israel in the region.
Hezbollah demonstrated a willingness to join the truce, but insisted that it must cover all Lebanese territory to prevent Israeli movements. The current conflict ignited on March 2, following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, prompting Hezbollah to launch rockets into northern Israel.
The dynamics of this conflict have left significant devastation in Lebanon, with over 2,000 fatalities reported and more than a million people displaced from their homes. As both nations explore peacemaking avenues, the future role of Hezbollah and its arsenals remains a critical topic. Israel has previously indicated plans to uphold security control over southern Lebanon, potentially signaling a prolonged engagement in the area.
During negotiations this week in Washington, both nations engaged in direct discussions to forge pathways towards peace, marking a rare moment in relations since the Lebanese Civil War in 1983. Trump expressed optimism regarding future talks between Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
A noteworthy concern is that while this ceasefire may temporarily pause hostilities, unresolved issues persist regarding Hezbollah's military capabilities. Lebanese authorities assert that any disarmament must be negotiated rather than enforced by military means, further complicating the landscape of peace negotiations.
