Mudslide Rescues 64‑Year‑Old Nepalese Woman From Buried Home
More than ten days after a wall of ice, rock and mud tore through a Himalayan valley in Nepal, rescuers are continuing to uncover survivors of the disaster. The dramatic event followed the rapid thaw of mountain glaciers and the sudden swelling of river systems, amplifying the frequency of mudslides in the region.
Chandika Shrestha, a 64‑year‑old resident of Nuwakot district, was found alive on the fourth floor of her partially buried house by members of Nepal's Armed Police Force on 5 September. Despite the precarious conditions, Shrestha survived breathing through the remaining open spaces in her damaged home.
She was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu for immediate medical assessment. The rescue operation underscores the urgent need for community preparedness strategies in areas poised for climate‑related hazard escalation.
