River boat quarantined after five deaths as DR Congo battles Ebola outbreak

The 255‑passenger Yingfeng 2, operated by a Chinese shipping firm, was stopped 65 km from Kinshasa for Ebola screening after five onboard passengers died with fever and diarrhoea.

Health Minister Roger Kamba reported that no test results were positive so far, but the vessel has been held offshore under WHO guidelines to ensure the virus does not spread into the capital’s supply chain.

The crew and cabin crew carried out screening for the Bundibugyo strain, the same virus that has killed 1,801 people in the latest DR Congo outbreak – the second deadliest since the epidemic began on 15 May.

Experts say the boat, which travelled more than 1,700 km along the Congo River, represents a key pathway for disease spread, especially as climate‑driven changes make river travel an increasing lifeline in rural Africa.

Citizen scientists in the local communities are now documenting temperature and rainfall patterns, hoping to link the rising heatwaves to higher Ebola transmission risks in the river basin.
