In brief
Chinese state media report a powerful 7.0‑magnitude earthquake struck Baqên County in the Nagqu region of Tibet, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others. The quake collapsed over 300 homes and cut most power, while rockfalls are blocking roads and hampering rescue teams. Authorities have declared an emergency and deployed rapid‑response crews, but access remains limited. This disaster follows devastating floods and landslides that hit Tibet and Nepal less than two months ago, underscoring the region's vulnerability to extreme events.
A magnitude‑7 earthquake has hit a mountainous region in Tibet, killing at least 16 people, according to Chinese state media.
The epicenter was Baqên County in the Nagqu region, 400 km north‑east of Lhasa, reported Xinhua citing the local emergency management bureau.
Authorities declared an emergency and deployed rescue teams to the struck area, where 32 others were injured. More than 300 homes collapsed, and power in the region was largely cut.
Rockfalls have forced roads to close, making it harder for aid crews to reach affected communities.
Tibet and Nepal were devastated by massive floods and landslides from a glacier collapse less than two months ago, which killed at least 1,400 people and left many missing.
