In brief
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned of ongoing Russian espionage in Germany after the arrest of a Ukrainian national suspected of spying for Russia. The suspect was alleged to have gathered sensitive data on German military production, including armored vehicles and ammunition. Merz called the arrest a success but cautioned that Russian intelligence activity remains consistently high. Earlier this month, former BND chief August Hanning was arrested for alleged espionage, signalling growing concerns over leaks of classified information. Germany continues to fortify security ties with the UK to counter hybrid threats and protect its defense supply chain.
Germany says Russian spy arrest highlights ongoing espionage threat.
In a ceremony in Berlin, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the arrest of a Ukrainian national suspected of gathering military intelligence for Russia, saying the case proved “a success” but warned that “Russian intelligence services remain at a consistently high level.”
According to the Federal Prosecutor General’s Office, the suspect – identified only as Vadym Y. to protect privacy – had been in contact with Russian agents through an intermediary since July 2025 and had collected information on the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives.
Merz added that the country expects further cases. Earlier this month, former BND chief August Hanning was arrested on charges of espionage, treason and passing classified documents to a foreign power, while a former BND employee was accused of corruptly handing around 2,000 secrets.
Germany has been one of Europe’s largest suppliers of weapons to Ukraine and is tightening security ties with the United Kingdom. In a summit in Montenegro, Merz and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged to counter hybrid attacks and safeguard the defense supply chain against foreign sabotage.
The incident comes amid reports of a Russian drone targeting the Leipzig/Halle Airport and heightened public debate over national security. Germany’s decision to arrest multiple spies this year underscores the urgency of protecting strategic infrastructure.
