Johannesburg mass shooting leaves 12 dead

At least twelve people were killed when a group of attackers opened fire inside an informal settlement in Crownland’s Cleveland area on Tuesday night, police announced, and a manhunt for the suspects is underway.

The police statement said that the attackers, more than ten in number, were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station before entering the settlement through both entrances. They moved through the area, firing at residents and community members before escaping in the same vehicle.

According to the police report, eight men and three women died on the scene, and a seventh victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Nine other people were taken to medical facilities for gunshot wounds.

Police swore an emergency response was dispatched in reaction to a “complaint of shooting in progress” at about 23:10 local time (21:10 GMT). Medical staff assisted the injured with on‑scene triage.

The motive for the attack remains unknown; investigators are treating it as an active case that may be linked to gang or personal disputes—common root causes of violence in informal settlements throughout South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with roughly 60 people killed each day on average. A 2024 estimate cites 3 million legally held firearms and a likely equal number of unlicensed weapons.

The incident comes a year after a mass shooting at a Johannesburg tavern that killed nine people. It further underscores the urgent need for crime‑prevention initiatives, robust policing and community‑based solutions to address the underlying violence that plagues many urban neighbourhoods.
