FRANCONIA, N.H. — For over 20 years, Susan Bushby, a 70-year-old housekeeper in New Hampshire's White Mountains, found solace in the proximity of her community health center. This lodgelike establishment became a second home for her and many others—a familiar space filled with friendly faces and the warmth of shared experiences.

Last month, however, the Ammonoosuc Community Health Services closed its doors for good, leaving Bushby and nearly 1,400 other patients with the daunting task of finding new healthcare options at least 10 miles away along rural roads.

Impact of Closure

Officials attribute the closure to cuts in Medicaid, a critical program for many low-income Americans, exacerbating the already strained healthcare landscape in rural areas. Patients like Bushby, now confronted with unfamiliar providers, struggle with the emotional fallout of building new relationships at a time when they need continuity of care the most.

“I was very disturbed. I was downright angry,” reflected Bushby, visibly shaken by the closure. "It’s going to be sad.”

Broader Issues in Rural Healthcare

The closure of the Franconia center echoes a larger trend in rural healthcare, with over 100 hospitals shutting down in the past decade and hundreds more at risk. Factors like Medicaid funding cuts and rising health insurance costs have left many community health centers in peril. As seen in New Hampshire, Senator Maggie Hassan commented on the dire consequences of these cuts, stating, “These providers are going to see more and more uninsured patients.”

Community Grief and Future Concerns

The loss has fostered a sense of grief within the community, where individuals have developed relationships with local healthcare providers over the years. Marsha Luce, worried for her husband reliant on ongoing treatment, voiced fears of loss not only of care but of the personal connections that facilitated his treatment journey. The unceremonious closure—lacking farewell celebrations or community acknowledgment—has deepened the sense of loss.

As Bushby and her neighbors ponder the future, questions loom: Is this closure a precursor to more significant healthcare failures looming on the horizon? With the challenges mounting, community members find their resilience tested as they seek paths forward in an increasingly complex healthcare landscape.
