In brief

Kianoosh Sanjari, an outspoken Iranian human rights advocate, committed suicide as a form of protest against the Iranian government's repression. His final act of defiance echoes a deeper struggle for democracy and freedom of expression nationwide, especially following recent political unrest.

A renowned Iranian human rights advocate, Kianoosh Sanjari, has tragically taken his own life as a protest against what he deemed the oppressive regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a poignant social media post, Sanjari warned that if four political prisoners were not released by 19:00 local time (15:30 GMT) on Wednesday, he would end his life in protest. His passing has been confirmed by fellow activists and resonates deeply within the community advocating for democratic reforms in Iran. Before his untimely death, Sanjari expressed a powerful wish for “one day Iranians” to rise and liberate themselves from what he perceived as slavery under the current regime. He was a staunch critic of Iran's government, championing the notion that “no one should be imprisoned” merely for articulating their views. On the morning of his death, he reiterated his stance, stating, “If Fateme Sepehari, Nasreen Shakrami, Tomaj Salehi, and Arsham Rezaei are not released from prison by 19:00 today ... I will end my life in protest against the dictatorship of Khamenei and his partners.”These four detainees were incarcerated for participating in the widespread protests that erupted following the tragic death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died under suspicious circumstances while in custody of Iran’s morality police in 2022. Sanjari himself became a victim of Iran's authoritarian crackdown, being arrested multiple times between 1999 and 2007 for his activism, leading to his eventual asylum in Norway. He returned to Iran in 2016, only to face further persecution, receiving an 11-year sentence in the notorious Evin prison, known for housing political prisoners. Although he was released on medical grounds in 2019, his subsequent treatment in a psychiatric hospital included alarming reports of electric shocks and restraints. The significance of Sanjari's life and tragic death resonates deeply within the human rights community, which has taken to social media to honor his legacy. Freedom of speech advocate Hossein Ronaghi stated, “Kianoosh Sanjari is not just a name; it is a symbol of years of pain, resistance, and struggle for freedom.” His sacrifice underscores the urgent need for fundamental reforms in Iran, as activists and citizens alike face escalating dangers in their quest for rights and liberties.
