Apple has taken down an app that uses crowdsourcing to flag sightings of U.S. immigration agents, apparently after being pressured by U.S. authorities.
'ICEBlock,' a free iPhone-only app, allowed users to anonymously report and monitor activities by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. As of Friday, it was no longer available on Apple's App Store.
We just received a message from Apple’s App Review that #ICEBlock has been removed from the App Store due to 'objectionable content,' the developer stated in a social media post. The only thing we can imagine is this is due to pressure from the Trump Admin. We have responded and we’ll fight this!
The developer reported that last month it had over 1 million users. After being removed, those who downloaded the app previously should still be able to use it.
Apple has yet to respond to a request for further comment. The company explained to other media outlets, We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place to discover apps. Based on information we’ve received from law enforcement about the safety risks associated with ICEBlock, we have removed it and similar apps from the App Store.
Amid escalating tensions, downloads for apps like ICEBlock surged as the previous administration intensified immigration enforcement through surprise raids. Critics argue that such technology has led to concerns about safety as authorities come under scrutiny. In a recent incident, a gunman opened fire at an ICE facility in Dallas, allegedly searching for apps that tracked the presence of ICE agents.
