A Haitian migrant has been accused of a fatal beating at a Florida petrol station - a violent attack that US President Donald Trump has leveraged to advocate for stricter immigration policies. Rolbert Joachin is charged with homicide after allegedly striking a woman repeatedly with a hammer, resulting in her death on April 3, according to US officials. Trump shared a graphic video of the incident, stating that it illustrates the necessity to end deportation protections for Haitian migrants.

A federal court had previously blocked Trump's administration from eliminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 350,000 Haitian immigrants, allowing them to live and work in the US due to unsafe conditions in Haiti.

On Truth Social, Trump characterized the video as 'one of the most vicious things you will ever see' and claimed that this one singular killing should prompt judges to stop obstructing his immigration policies. The shared video depicts Joachin attacking a woman at the petrol station before leaving the scene, raising public concern about immigrant violence.

Micah McCombs, a special agent in charge with Homeland Security Investigations, described the video as 'senseless' during a press briefing. Following the attack, local police collaborated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to apprehend Joachin, who first entered the US in August 2022 and was granted TPS, which is slated to expire in 2024.

TPS is designed to protect immigrants from deportation to countries experiencing turmoil, including natural disasters or armed conflicts. The Trump administration has argued that TPS has functioned more like a permanent residency program, contrary to its original intent.

As the Supreme Court is set to review the TPS status for Haitians, the legal future remains uncertain for many migrants from various countries. Despite the ongoing discussions, the Department of Homeland Security has stated that Joachin will be deported regardless of legal outcomes regarding his case.
