UK Consulate in East Jerusalem Facing Closure

Britain announced that most diplomats will leave the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem after Israel’s foreign minister threatened to shut the post in retaliation for UK sanctions on Israeli settlements.

Israel said it would shut the consulate, citing the UK’s sanctions on settlements as a violation of international law. British diplomats will temporarily withdraw for safety, while the consulate itself will continue to operate as a UK Mission under a limited scope of activity.

The UK’s Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, urged that the building should not close and would continue to provide vital services to Palestinian communities in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. He also underscored Britain’s view that East Jerusalem remains occupied territory.

The remaining seven diplomats will remain independent and operational, providing limited engagement with the Palestinian Authority, though Israel insists the scope remains narrow.

The decision follows last‑ditch efforts to maintain the post ahead of a 30‑day deadline set by Israel. Diplomats say the move avoids a full diplomatic rupture, but the UK has warned it reserves reciprocal actions if the situation escalates.
