Chaos in the Sky: Passengers and Crew Overcome Attack on Flydubai Flight
By Doug Faulkner
A routine journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a horror scene when a passenger stabbed the pilot and attempted to seize control of a Flydubai aircraft. The violent intrusion forced the plane to nosedive over 17,000 ft (5,200 m) in under two minutes.
The attacker was overpowered by the pilot, crew and a courageous group of passengers. After the crew communicated that the situation was ’under control’, the plane managed to stabilize and was safely diverted to Saudi Arabia.
The incident was survived by a family of four. Adam Polovincik, father of six‑year‑old son and three‑year‑old daughter, recounted how he hugged his children, tried to keep calm, and praised the crew and fellow passengers. “I was shouting to my kids, it’s going to be all right,” he said, adding that he focused on keeping his voice steady to avoid feeding the panic of the younger passengers.
The attacker was arrested in Saudi Arabia and will be transferred to the United Arab Emirates, from where the plane departed. The stabbed pilot remains in a stable condition in hospital.
In the wider context, the incident underscores the ongoing challenge of ensuring aviation safety amid rising security threats. Authorities in the UAE and Israel have pledged to strengthen protocols and improve real‑time monitoring to prevent similar events.
After landing, Israeli passengers were offered water, food, coffee and sweets despite the lack of diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia, displaying the humanitarian spirit of the response. The passengers were later transported to Tel Aviv, where they received a warm, celebratory welcome from crowds who sung, danced and waved Israeli flags.
The courageous actions of the crew and passengers have earned praise from the flight deck pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, who opened the cockpit door allowing the passengers to gain control. The family's survival has become a testament to the teamwork and resilience that defies a tragic moment.
While the event is grim, it serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, robust security measures, and the human capacity to act decisively in emergencies. The flight’s ordeal also highlights the broader need for international cooperation in aviation safety to protect travelers worldwide.
