President Donald Trump announced today on Truth Social that the newly convened Board of Peace, a U.S.-backed body aimed at ending Gaza’s violence, has reached a milestone agreement to fully disarm Hamas and other militant groups. He described the deal as a “critical step toward Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government.”
The Board’s plan is divided into phases: first, the disarmament of Hamas; second, the withdrawal of Israeli forces once the process is complete; and third, the deployment of an International Stabilisation Force to work with a Palestinian police force so Gaza can become safe for residents and neighbouring communities. Trump positioned the United States as a key broker and said that the next stages would be carefully structured.
The announcement comes after a senior Palestinian official, who had previously supported the Board’s proposal, informed the BBC that Hamas rejected the disarmament plan earlier in the year. Neither the Palestinian leadership nor Israel has yet released comment on the United‑States’ claim.
The dispute traces back to the October 7 attack by Hamas, which killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages. Israel’s response—a large‑scale campaign in Gaza—has claimed more than 73,000 casualties, including 21,280 children, per the territory’s hawker‑run health ministry.
With all parties on high alert, the promised board and its disarmament agenda may offer a new chapter in a conflict that has deeply impacted the region’s human rights and environment alike.
