US border tsar Tom Homan announced the conclusion of the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota, confirming that President Donald Trump has approved the request for the operation to end. Speaking at a news conference, Homan emphasized his continued presence in Minnesota to oversee the drawdown process and ensure its success.
Homan noted that the cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officers has contributed to Minnesota becoming 'less of a sanctuary state'. This cooperation has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of enforcement targets in the state. Over the course of the operation, known as Operation Metro Surge, which involved the deployment of more than 2,000 immigration officers, there were significant protests nationwide sparked by incidents involving federal agents.
Despite the end of the surge, Homan stated that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) will continue to maintain a presence in Minnesota, transitioning back to a smaller operational footprint. He highlighted the success of the operation in arresting undocumented individuals, some of whom were charged with serious crimes, and commended local officials for their efforts to facilitate enforcement actions.
