OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Connors State College community is in mourning following the loss of sophomore basketball player Ethan Dietz, who passed away after sustaining a head injury during a game in Texas. Reports indicate Dietz was injured during the second half of the match on Saturday, and despite the efforts of medical personnel, his condition worsened leading to his death on Tuesday.
In a heartfelt statement, the college described Ethan as a true representation of what it means to be part of the Cowboy family, emphasizing his dedication and spirit. Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team, the statement read, expressing solidarity with his family and friends during this difficult time.
Dietz, standing at 6-foot-8, was an athletic forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, who had been making significant contributions on the court, averaging 11 points per game across eight games this season. In the game where he was injured, he had already tallied eight points and four rebounds in just 20 minutes of play.
As a mark of respect, several of the college's men's and women's basketball games have been canceled in the wake of his death. A vigil is set to take place on December 1 at the campus in Warner, Oklahoma, allowing the community to come together to honor and remember Ethan's life and impact.
