Troy Nehls, the Republican U.S. Representative from Texas, announced his retirement from Congress effective at the end of his term in 2026. This decision is made to prioritize family over his political career. Nehls is known for his strong alignment with former President Donald Trump, even displaying Trump’s mug shot on a T-shirt. In a post on the social platform X, he expressed the importance of informing Trump personally about his retirement plans, noting, 'President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend.'
In a supportive gesture, Nehls has endorsed his twin brother, Trever Nehls, to take over his congressional seat. Trever announced his candidacy via Facebook, stating his commitment to stand alongside Trump.
Since entering Congress in 2021, Troy Nehls has brought three decades of law enforcement experience and over two decades in the Army Reserve to his role. He has been a notable figure in Congress, having voted to challenge the legitimacy of Joe Biden's election victory and was previously chosen by then-House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy for a special committee regarding the January 6 Capitol events before McCarthy's selections were altered due to objections from Nancy Pelosi. Nehls currently serves on both the Judiciary and the Transportation and Infrastructure committees, having won his district, located southwest of Houston, by a significant margin of over 24 percentage points during the last election.
