Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his starring role in the US teen drama Dawson's Creek, has died aged 48 after a diagnosis of bowel cancer.
Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning, his family said in a statement posted on social media. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.
The star was diagnosed with the disease in the latter half of 2023 but only revealed the news in November 2024.
The father of six starred in multiple popular shows and films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the cult classic Dawson's Creek and Varsity Blues.
In an interview with Business Insider, he revealed he started experiencing changes in his bowel movements, a common symptom of bowel cancer. He stopped drinking coffee to see whether that would help before having a screening test, which revealed he had stage three of the disease, meaning it had spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Van Der Beek has spent time raising awareness about screening and how early detection can save lives. He said, I've learned a lot. If I can save anyone from having to go through this, that's magic.
His death has led to an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Co-star Busy Philipps expressed her deep sorrow, declaring, My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today…every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him...
Others, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, also shared their condolences, emphasizing the deep loss felt by not just his family, but the entire world.
Van Der Beek's impact on television, characterized by sincerity and depth in his performances, will long be remembered as part of a legacy that inspired many.
