The Nigerian Army has announced that it successfully rescued Amina Abubakar, the wife of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, after she had been held captive for several weeks in the north‑west state of Katsina. The rescue follows the tragic death of the general in custody earlier this week, where he was reportedly killed due to health complications amid the captivity.
According to the military, the operation was conducted under sustained offensive operations. While the troops advanced through the area, they encountered the kidnappers, and Amina was shot during the confrontation. She is now receiving treatment in a military hospital, as stated by the armed forces in their latest communique.
The abduction of the couple was initially reported at the end of last month. One of the daughters, Bilkisu, confirmed the rescue on a WhatsApp message, expressing gratitude for the Army’s intervention and praying for her mother’s recovery.
While no criminal group claimed responsibility, the region is known for frequent bandit kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on rural communities. The military’s attempt to locate the kidnappers continues, as officials pledge ongoing support to Amina and her family.
Prime President Bola Tinubu expressed shock at the general’s death, referring to it as a reminder of the threat posed by armed criminal groups. He underscored the need for heightened vigilance and security measures across Nigeria’s vulnerable regions.
The incident highlights the complex interplay between security challenges and societal stability in Nigeria, emphasizing the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to address the underlying drivers of violence and insecurity in the region.
