Misinformation Sparks Violence: ZDF’s Edit of Elon Musk Claim

German public broadcaster ZDF removed a segment from its news magazine ZDFheute Live that linked tech billionaire Elon Musk to calls for the “hunt” of migrants after a knife attack in Belfast. The allegation was based on a post shared by far‑right activist Tommy Robinson and later amplified by Musk on X, the platform he owns.

Following a lawsuit threat, ZDF issued a “cease and desist” declaration, corrected the wording, and removed the misleading excerpt. The broadcaster described its original phrasing as “imprecise and therefore misleading” and added a full transparency notice.

Belfast’s violence erupted after the murder of a 14‑year‑old boy in Old Manchester Street. Police arrested a man of Sudanese origin on an attempted murder charge, and the “hunting” claim added justification to a racist mob that set homes and vehicles aflame.

The clash illustrates how social media narratives can distort facts and inflame local tensions. A US‑based centre for combating digital hate has said that Musk’s amplification of anti‑migrant rhetoric “played a significant role” in the unrest.

Such incidents warn media outlets that careful fact‑checking and transparent corrections are mandatory, especially when covering sensitive migration issues that may intersect with environmental pressures and climate‑related displacement.
