MINNEAPOLIS — Governor Tim Walz expressed optimism on Tuesday regarding the potential end of the federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota, stating he expects it to conclude within days rather than weeks or months. This expectation stems from his recent discussions with key officials from the Trump administration, including border czar Tom Homan.
During a news conference, Walz elaborated on his conversation with Homan, who took control of the Minneapolis enforcement operation earlier this year. Following backlash against the federal crackdown, Walz remarked that there’s reason for cautious hope as every indication suggests that the enforcement action may be winding down.
“We’re very much in a trust but verify mode,” said Walz, maintaining that he expects to receive more information from the administration shortly. He emphasized the need for an end to what he described as an “occupation” that has deeply affected local communities.
Governor Walz hopes Homan will announce the cessation of enforcement actions by Friday, accentuating his desire for an immediate resolution. The change comes amid ongoing tensions between local entities and federal immigration authorities, particularly following incidents that raised safety and public trust issues.
Despite the hopeful outlook, Walz acknowledged that 2,300 federal officers continue to be present in Minnesota, which still has significant implications for the state's communities. The governor pointed out the economic fallout from the crackdown, emphasizing that businesses like The Market at Malcolm Yards have suffered as customers and employees recoil from federal enforcement actions.
As local officials work to navigate the impact of federal enforcement, there's recognition of the strained relationships and the convoluted nature of cooperation during investigations related to fatal incidents involving federal officers.
Walz concluded by emphasizing community safety and economic stability as paramount issues, while remaining cautiously optimistic about the future of federal actions in the state.
