INDIANAPOLIS — An alarming incident in Indianapolis has drawn attention to the risks faced by public officials as Councilman Ron Gibson and his young son were awakened by 13 gunshots fired at their front door. A note stating 'No Data Centers' was left in proximity to the scene, illustrating the conflict surrounding a newly approved data center project in the area.
Gibson, who represents the district affected by the development, conveyed his shock and concern, especially given that the bullets struck alarming close to where his son was playing just hours before. 'That reality is deeply unsettling,' Gibson expressed in a statement following the incident, emphasizing that the attack endangered not only his family but his entire neighborhood.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have indicated that they are treating the shooting as an isolated, targeted incident, with the FBI now involved in the investigation.
Gibson expressed his commitment to his service despite the violence, stating, 'I will continue to serve the residents of this district with integrity and respect for all voices.' He further condemned the violence as an unacceptable means of political expression.
The attack follows the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission's recent approval of a rezoning petition for Metrobloks, a developer planning to establish a data center in Gibson's district.
