BELEM, Brazil (Echosphere.News) — California Governor Gavin Newsom has harshly criticized the absence of federal climate leadership at COP30, stating that the U.S. risks economic isolation and environmental degradation by neglecting global warming issues. During the United Nations climate negotiations in Belem, he urged for collaboration and innovation in response to climate change, contrasting California’s proactive policies against the Trump administration's rollback of environmental protections.
Newsom, the top state executive representing one of the largest economies in the world, stated, Trump’s absence sends the message that we do not care about global challenges. He vigorously defended California’s commitment to climate initiatives, despite federal policies favoring fossil fuels.
“We are giving away our economic power to nations like China by failing to invest in green energy and sustainable practices,” Newsom remarked. He pointed out that America's historical emissions put it in a unique position to lead the global climate effort, rather than refrain from participation.
Throughout the discussions, Newsom remarked that even countries like Russia and Saudi Arabia recognize the importance of sustainable energy, highlighting a significant global shift towards green technology amidst a backdrop of increasingly severe climate impacts felt in California and beyond, including wildfires and floods.
“Climate change is real, and ignoring it is not an option. We must take action now,” he added, calling on fellow governors and mayors to stand united in promoting climate resilience and innovation.
As COP30 progresses, the absence of federal representation has raised questions about the future of U.S. environmental policies and leadership in international climate commitments.
