SAN FRANCISCO — In a significant ruling, the California Supreme Court has ordered the disbarment of John Eastman, a prominent attorney linked to the Trump campaign's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. This ruling marks the culmination of a prolonged effort by the California State Bar to revoke Eastman's law license, following claims that he devised a strategy aimed at disrupting the certification of Joe Biden's electoral victory.

The State Bar Court recommended disbarment after Eastman was found to have misled courts and the public through false assertions concerning the election. Chief trial counsel for the State Bar, George Cardona, stated that Eastman's conduct undermined the integrity necessary for legal professionals in California.

Despite facing disbarment, Eastman’s attorney Randall Miller contends that this decision raises significant constitutional questions, and plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that it infringes upon Eastman’s First Amendment rights.

The States United Democracy Center, which had initiated an ethics complaint against Eastman, celebrated the decision, highlighting the serious implications of his actions on American democracy. Eastman had been closely associated with Trump's efforts leading up to the January 6th Capitol riot, where he authored a memo suggesting that Vice President Pence reject legitimate electoral votes.

As part of his defense, Eastman claimed his intentions were not to steal the election but to explore options that would allow for further investigations into supposed voting irregularities. However, courts across the nation dismissed Trump's claims of electoral fraud.

In addition to the disbarment, Eastman is facing other legal challenges including criminal charges related to alleged conspiracy efforts in Georgia to overturn the election results in that state, in a case that has also seen significant legal scrutiny.
