Authorities in California arrested a suspect near Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes ahead of a high‑profile fundraising dinner on Tuesday. The 38‑year‑old, identified as Jeanine John Taele, was found in the visitor’s parking lot with a loaded pistol and a 16‑round hollow‑point magazine, in breach of California’s strict gun legislation.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said the man was “observed walking throughout the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security‑planning activities.” Plainclothes federal agents reported him at 15:30 ET (23:30 BST), prompting a prompt arrest. Police discovered he was already wanted for a robbery in El Segundo, about 15 miles north of Rancho Palos Verdes.
Inside the suspect’s Downey home, which was searched by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, investigators located an illegally modified AR‑platform rifle, a .45‑calorie pistol, high‑capacity magazines, body armour and an array of hollow‑point bullets, along with notebooks containing concerning statements.
The sheriff’s office stressed no credible threat to the community had been identified, but said the event “underscores the importance of vigilance, strong partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, and the proactive steps taken to identify and investigate suspicious activity before it can escalate.” The investigation remains ongoing and may lead to additional charges, with the Secret Service assisting in the inquiry.
While the suspect faced no charges related to a potential attack on President Trump, the arrest occurred just days before his visit to the golf course for a Republican fundraising dinner. Trump, a former president, has survived three assassination attempts and has overseen his team’s review of security protocols following a recent shooting at a White House hotel.
