In brief
In the aftermath of the tragic sinking of the Sea Story in Egypt's Red Sea, divers have shared their harrowing experiences of the rescue operation. Thanks to efforts by family members and local authorities, several survivors have been pulled from the wreckage, prompting discussions on maritime safety.
The recent sinking of a tourist boat, the Sea Story, in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt has sparked a significant rescue operation, with divers detailing a complex and perilous mission to locate survivors trapped inside the submerged vessel. Khattab al-Faramawy, an Egyptian diver involved in the rescue, communicated the challenges faced by the rescuers as they navigated 12 meters underwater with only flashlights for visibility. The incident unfolded on Monday when the boat, carrying 44 passengers and crew, was engulfed by powerful waves near Marsa Alam. On Tuesday, the rescue team managed to retrieve four bodies and five survivors, although the identities of the victims have yet to be released. It has been reported that two of those missing are British nationals. Al-Faramawy shared the emotional toll of the mission, expressing hope for the remaining passengers still unaccounted for. The Sea Story, largely submerged with just a meter remaining above water, posed significant challenges to rescue operations. Among those rescued was Al-Faramawy's nephew, Youssef, a 23-year-old diving instructor who became trapped while trying to assist his fellow passengers. Youssef's father, Hussam, relayed the anguish and relief upon learning of his son’s survival, highlighting the desperate moments in which family members waited anxiously for news. The Egyptian navy has taken command of the rescue efforts, keeping survivors away from media attention as they deal with the aftermath. Footage released by local authorities documents the harrowing rescue process, showing survivors being brought to shore wrapped in blankets and one on a stretcher, expressing relief after enduring the ordeal. The Sea Story, which had embarked on a five-day diving expedition, was reportedly struck by rough winds after a warning was issued by the Egyptian Meteorological Authority regarding high waves. While the vessel held a valid safety certificate, questions are being raised about adherence to maritime safety protocols amidst the thriving tourism sector in the region. Passengers onboard hailed from various countries, including Belgium, the UK, China, and several others, with ongoing assistance from foreign offices and embassies to support affected families. The incident underscores the urgency for stricter maritime safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future as diving tours continue to draw tourists to the picturesque Red Sea resorts of Marsa Alam.
