US President Donald Trump has declared a total and complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. This announcement was made via a post on Truth Social, where Trump labeled the Venezuelan government led by Nicolás Maduro as a foreign terrorist organization.
Trump's statement accuses the Maduro regime of stealing US assets and engaging in activities such as terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. He emphasized the military presence in the region, asserting that Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America.
With tensions escalating, Trump also accused Maduro of utilizing stolen oil to finance criminal activities, including drug terrorism, human trafficking, and murder. These remarks come shortly after US Navy operations that have reportedly targetted boats carrying illegal substances toward the US.
Venezuela is home to some of the world's largest proven oil reserves. The US has imposed sanctions against the Maduro government for years, further tightening its grip with new measures against additional ships transporting Venezuelan oil.
Recent actions included the seizure of the tanker 'Skipper' off the Venezuelan coast, labeled as involved in illicit oil shipping. The White House indicated that the vessel would be taken to an American port, while the Venezuelan government condemned the action as an act of piracy, alleging that the US had kidnapped the crew.
The situation remains tense as the US has bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean, further complicating diplomatic relations. The urgency of the blockade signals a firm stance from the US amid persistent challenges regarding Venezuela's leadership and international resources.
