In brief

In the latest clash over satellite internet, President Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk has restored Starlink’s full service to Ukraine. The claim follows Ukraine’s own report that its military still faces speed restraints, slowing drone attacks and early warning systems. Musk has defended that the U.S. government may be influencing the limits, while the White House denies any directive. With Russian attacks intensifying, the debate highlights the strategic importance of resilient broadband in modern warfare.

Trump says Musk restored Ukraine’s internet access.

The US president announced that Elon Musk had lifted the restrictions on Starlink that had been limiting Internet speeds for Ukraine’s forces.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned that the satellite link, which the country now uses for battlefield communications and drone control, was still operating at only a fraction of its capacity, slowing aerial attacks and intelligence gathering.

Musk has repeatedly claimed that access to the military‑grade Starlink (Starshield) is controlled by the U.S. Pentagon, and that any slowdown may be the result of government policy. The White House, however, insists it has not ordered any limitation.

Trump’s intervention, reportedly couched in concern over Russian attacks on oil refineries that raise global fuel prices, was timed just before a Wall Street Journal report that he called Musk to ask for a lift of the speed cap. Investors and allies have criticised the move, arguing that lower bandwidth hampers Ukraine’s ability to respond to missile launches.

The debate underscores the strategic role of high‑speed satellite broadband in war zones, where reliable data streams can mean the difference between winning and losing a skirmish. As the conflict continues, Ukraine and its partners will keep pushing for unimpeded access to Starlink’s global constellation.
