BONHAM, Texas — In a tragic incident that left a community reeling, three brothers—ages 6, 8, and 9— drowned in a pond after falling through the ice during a severe winter storm in Bonham, Texas.
The children's mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, recounted the harrowing moments as she watched her sons struggle in the freezing water. They were just screaming, telling me to help them, Hangaman told reporters. And I watched all of them struggle... I just had to try to fight for my life at that point.
The incident occurred on Monday when the brothers fell into the pond after being warned by their mother to stay away from the icy water. First responders rushed to the scene, pulling the two older boys from the water, while extensive search efforts were launched to find the youngest brother.
Despite Hangaman's desperate attempts to rescue her children, she was unable to reach them in time. Rescuers later managed to retrieve all three boys, but it was too late. It was only me; I couldn’t help them all by myself, she said.
The Bonham Independent School District, where the boys were students, canceled classes due to the severe weather that had swept across much of the nation. The community reacted with immense sorrow, with Superintendent Lance Hamlin expressing condolences in a letter to parents, stating, We are devastated by this unimaginable loss, and our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all who knew and loved these children.
The pond, now covered with a layer of ice, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the ongoing winter storm, which has claimed over 40 lives in various states across the country. As the weather challenges continue, communities are left to process this heartbreaking tragedy and the loss of three vibrant young lives.
