WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A shocking act of violence erupted in a local park on Monday morning, as a planned confrontation between young people turned into a tragic mass shooting. Around 10 a.m., gunfire broke out at Leinbach Park, located close to Jefferson Middle School, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Winston-Salem police Assistant Chief Jason Swaim reported that the situation escalated when two juveniles convened at the park intending to engage in a fight. During this altercation, a firearm was discharged, leading to multiple victims being shot. While authorities have identified many people present, they are still working to clarify each person's involvement—be it as a suspect, victim, or witness.

Despite the severe nature of the incident, Swaim reassured the public that schools in the vicinity remained secure. Parents were permitted to pick up their children from Jefferson Middle School to ensure their safety.

The shooting took place in a suburban setting northwest of downtown Winston-Salem, a city known for its historical connection to the tobacco industry, particularly the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event.
