ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. — A tragic mass shooting occurred over the weekend at Willie’s Bar and Grill, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring at least twenty more. The shootout took place during an alumni gathering for Battery Creek High School, drawing a crowd from the local community.

With flowers and candles placed outside the bar, the Beaufort County coroner’s office has officially identified the deceased: Kashawn Glaze (22), Chiraad Smalls (33), Amos Gary (54), and A’shan’tek Milledge (22).

The mass shooting left attendees in shock, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the community. The establishment is known not only for its Gullah-inspired cuisine but also for serving as a community hub, a role emphasized by its owner, Willie Turral. “It's hard to have your name on the door and not feel the weight of what's happening,” Turral shared regarding the incident.

As investigations continue, authorities are reviewing leads and gathering information from the community. “We appreciate the many members who have been coming forward with information. Your patience is greatly valued as we navigate this difficult tragedy,” stated the sheriff’s office.

Gullah descendants, numbering around 5,000 on St. Helena Island, trace their heritage to enslaved West Africans who worked the area’s rice plantations. The recent violence adds to the grief felt by this tight-knit community.
