A mass shooting at a crowded bar in the southern US state of South Carolina has left four people dead and at least 20 injured, officials reported.


Hundreds of people were gathered at the popular bar on St Helena Island in the early hours of Sunday morning when gunfire erupted, causing many victims and witnesses to flee to nearby businesses for safety, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's office.


The authorities confirmed four fatalities at the scene and reported that at least 20 individuals were injured, with four in critical condition and transported to local hospitals.


The incident is currently under investigation, with law enforcement looking into potential suspects.


Upon arrival, police and first responders encountered several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds, as stated by the sheriff's office.


It's still uncertain whether the shooting was a random act or targeted violence; a spokesperson for the sheriff's office has not provided further details.
