More than three million children globally perished in 2022 from infections resistant to antibiotics, according to a crucial study led by distinguished child health experts. The report identified African and South East Asian regions as the most severely impacted by antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major health crisis evolving as bacteria become resistant to commonly used medications.
This extensive research utilized diverse data sources, including insights from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, to paint a troubling picture of AMR's toll on child mortality. The findings demonstrate a substantial rise in AMR-related infections among children, more than ten times greater than previously recorded over a period of only three years. The COVID-19 pandemic has potentially exacerbated this already troubling trend.
Antibiotics, essential for treating a range of bacterial infections, from pneumonia to surgical prophylaxis, have become less effective due to the growing resistance developed by microbes. The misuse and over-prescription of these drugs have accelerated this worrying development, while the pipeline for new antibiotic creation has slowed.
Lead researchers Dr. Yanhong Jessika Hu from Australia's Murdoch Children's Research Institute and Prof. Herb Harwell from the Clinton Health Access Initiative highlight a more than 160% rise in the use of critical "watch antibiotics" in South East Asia and a 126% increase in Africa. Reserve antibiotics, considered last-line defenses against severe infections, saw a 45% increase and a dramatic 125% rise in these regions.
The study raises significant concerns that, without effective alternatives, the rise in drug-resistant infections may lead to dire outcomes. Prof. Harwell emphasizes that AMR is a pervasive issue demanding global attention, particularly as it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations, including children.
The WHO has classified AMR as one of the foremost threats to global health, but experts warn that solving this issue is complex and requires a comprehensive approach. Preventative measures like improved vaccination rates, better sanitation, and hygiene practices are considered vital, alongside increased awareness around antibiotic usage.
Dr. Lindsey Edwards from King’s College London echoes the urgency of these findings, urging global health leaders to take decisive actions to avert potential backslides in child health advancements, especially in regions most at risk. Without immediate interventions, AMR could significantly undermine the health of children worldwide.
