On Monday, the name of Sydney childcare worker Hamish Tait was released after a court order lifted a police request to keep him anonymous. Tait, 35, now faces 329 criminal charges for the alleged sexual abuse of 136 children over a 16‑year period.
Tait was first arrested in July last year. The charges include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a child’s private act without consent. Police have reached out to 121 families linked to the incident and continue to identify the remaining 22 victims.
AFP Acting Commander Luke Needham described any form of child sexual abuse as “confronting and horrific” and noted Tait worked in 62 early childhood education facilities, mainly across Sydney’s north‑west.
The alleged offences occurred at four childcare centres and Tait’s own private business. Police have launched a website, Operation Moonbi, to list the centres involved and offer support services to affected families.
Additional charges include 22 counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 years for the production of child abuse material and 18 counts of intentionally touching a child under 10 years.
The investigation began when Tait was linked to illegal online activity in June. A raid on his property in Glossodia uncovered child abuse material on seized devices.
The case underscores a troubling trend of child‑abuse allegations in Australian childcare settings, including the 2024 confession of Ashley Paul Griffith and the 2023 charges against Joshua Dale Brown.
