The Sound and Sight of Growth
Residents in Sydney’s Lane Cove suburb report that a data‑centre only 350 m from their homes produces a constant humming – the soundtrack to a continent‑wide race to house AI workloads. Four new builds are already slated in a local industrial park, while a giant 1 GW facility in western Sydney threatens to become the nation’s largest single energy user. Besides the audible roar, the sheer bulk of the glass‑and‑steel structures can influence local infrastructure and sightlines, prompting protests from community groups.
Energy and Water Under Pressure
Data‑centres require continuous electrical supply that is often beyond the capacity of intermittent wind and solar, which has led times to gas‑fired or coal plants in the United States. In Australia, the Australian Energy Market Operator projects that data‑centre demand could triple by 2030, potentially pushing NSW power prices higher by 26% by 2035. Meanwhile, the Climate Council warns of a surge in new power stations to sustain the sector’s growth.
Water usage is equally staggering: a single complex can draw up to 40 million litres a day – roughly 80,000 household homes – to keep servers cool. Sydney Water estimates that data‑centres could use 25% of the city’s drinking water by 2035. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s 2027 legislation will require large‑scale centres to curb water intake and fund necessary infrastructure, but it applies only to new projects, leaving existing facilities untouched.
Jobs, Trust and the Question of Purpose
Construction of a major data‑centre can temporarily boost a town’s labour force by thousands, but operational staff numbers usually fall to about a hundred.
