Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress, ending a decades-long career that saw the California Democrat become one of the most powerful figures in US politics.
In a video message on Thursday, Pelosi said she will not be seeking re-election to Congress at the end of her term in January 2027.
It marks the end of a storied political career: Pelosi, 85, became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House and led her party in the lower chamber of Congress from 2003 until 2023.
We have made history, we have made progress, Pelosi said in her message.
Pelosi highlighted the necessity of continued democratic participation, stating, As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. She was first elected to Congress in 1987 and was a crucial player in passing landmark legislation, including healthcare reform and climate initiatives.
Pelosi's departure will leave a significant void in the political landscape, especially after her role in promoting various Democratic agendas during both the Obama and Biden administrations. As divisions deepened in Congress, especially under Donald Trump’s presidency, Pelosi often found herself at the center of political battles, including two impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Since stepping down from her role as Speaker, Pelosi has continued to influence politics, aiding in efforts for redistricting in California aimed at strengthening Democratic representation.
