Louvre Gallery Reopens After Jewel Heist
The historic Galerie d'Apollon in Paris’ Louvre Museum reopened this Wednesday, almost a year after a daring robbery stole jewels worth millions from the famed gallery that once housed France’s crown jewels.
According to museum director Christophe Leribault, the space will no longer display the crown jewels or the stolen gemstones. They will now be displayed in secure vaults located elsewhere in the museum.
The thieves used a truck fitted with a mechanical ladder to climb onto a balcony and breach an access point, resulting in the theft of precious items that remain unaccounted for and the arrest of four suspects.
This incident highlights the challenge of protecting cultural heritage through state‑of‑the‑art security, and prompts a review of security protocols in museums worldwide.
