The eruption forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights across Indonesia and left an estimated 270,000 passengers stranded, with Jakarta’s Soekarno‑Hatta International Airport and three other airports extending closures until 18:00 local time on Monday due to detected ash in surrounding airspaces.

Travelers gathered in crowded departure halls, with passengers from morning flights clinging to information screens and those scheduled for later departures anxiously awaiting updates. One passenger, Finna, recounted how repeated rescheduling left her stranded and eventually forced her to spend the night on intercity trains before finally arriving in Jakarta early Monday morning.

The disruption also affected educational, shipping, and conservation activities; a team from Save the Rhino International had to abandon plans in Ujung Kulon National Park, highlighting how natural events can abruptly impede environmental research and conservation work.

The Indonesian Geological Agency warned that the probability of further eruptions remains high, with ash clouds reaching up to 15,000 m, though no tsunami risk was associated with the current activity. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi noted that airport authorities were conducting ash‑level tests every 30 minutes to evaluate whether the plume was expanding or subsiding.

Authorities advised against approaching the volcano’s crater within a 3 km radius and restricted ships passing through the Sunda Strait from entering the same exclusion zone.
