In brief

On October 16, 2026 a 16‑year‑old former student opened fire in a special educational needs class in Bend, Oregon. While the teacher wrestled the suspect, a nearby father armed with a .40‑caliber pistol intervened and fatally shot the teen, preventing further bloodshed. Police confirmed the teacher and the father’s actions saved lives. The tragedy left four dead, including a five‑year‑old and a teacher, and raised questions about student mental health, gun access and school security.

In a dramatic turn at the rear entrance of Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, a 16‑year‑old former student opened fire in a special‑needs classroom, shooting four people to death. As the gunman lunged for a shotgun, a teacher threw her phone and wrestled the gun from his hands on the floor.

The fight was interrupted when a nearby father, driving past the school, ran into the building with a legally concealed .40‑caliber pistol. He fired multiple rounds at the gunman, killing him before the teen could strike again.

Police confirmed that the suspect, Griffin J. John II, had a shotgun loaded with 44 rounds and had fired about fifteen shots inside the classroom. The teacher who wrestled the weapon was unharmed, and both the father and the teacher received commendations from the Bend Police Department for stopping the crisis.

Officials identified two of the four victims: five‑year‑old Rhoam Summer and 25‑year‑old teacher Meghan Lambert. The families of an eight‑year‑old and an eleven‑year‑old child have declined public identification. A 54‑year‑old teacher was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, and a seven‑year‑old student was also injured but stabilized.

Mayor Kayla Epstein said the community “will never forget the courage displayed today.” The news conference also highlighted the need for better school security protocols, mental‑health support for students, and rigorous background checks for gun ownership.

President Donald Trump praised the bystander as a “great hero,” while Governor Kate Kotek thanked the father for stopping a possible greater loss of life. Both officials called for continued vigilance and support for victims’ families.
