MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, is currently on high alert as the FBI investigates a suspicious package found outside one of its gates earlier this week. Authorities revealed that the package contained 'possible energetic materials,' yet the analysis of the material is still pending.
In a statement, the FBI Tampa confirmed that investigations are ongoing and provided no additional details about the package's contents. Energetic materials can refer to items such as explosives, fuels, or propellants.
On the same day, the base was placed under a shelter-in-place order following a received threat. MacDill officials stated, 'We take all threats seriously and are taking appropriate measures to prioritize the safety and security of our installation.' Although the order was lifted two hours later, heightened security measures remain in effect.
The base was operating under Force Protection Charlie (FPCON CHARLIE), the second-highest military security level, allowing officials to implement proactive security measures. Personnel at MacDill have been advised to stay vigilant, comply with security directives, and report any suspicious activity.
MacDill, which hosts the U.S. Central Command responsible for military operations in the Middle East, is one of the bases that has been on alert since the recent escalation of conflicts in the region, including the ongoing war in Iran.
Last week, a tragic incident resulted in the death of six crew members of a KC-135 refueling aircraft during operations related to ongoing military activities. Three crew members were affiliated with the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill.
