Ghana mourns its tallest man – a generous, popular giant
Ghana’s renowned giant, Sulemana Abdul Samed, known locally as Awuche, passed away on Monday in the northern city of Tamale. The 33‑year‑old had been treated for infected sores on his legs, a complication of his underlying condition, Marfan syndrome.
Awuche had been officially measured by the BBC in December 2022 and found to stand 7ft 4in (223 cm), a height that earned him notoriety across the country. He was also known for his friendly temperament and generosity towards his community in Gambaga.
“Everyone knew how generous and kind he was,” said his relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, who has been covering the story for the BBC. “After his death, people still come to his home to understand what happened.”
Marfan syndrome, a genetic connective‑tissue disorder, has limited his mobility and led to severe medical complications. Despite efforts by a benefactor—brother of former President John Mahama—to cover his medical bills, his condition ultimately proved fatal.
The family has decided to hold his burial in Tamale instead of Gambaga to avoid an overwhelming influx of mourners, as the village had already been a focal point for the local community’s identity and pride.
