Eggs thrown in Kosovo Parliament amid political turbulence

On Saturday, a routine parliamentary session in Kosovo turned chaotic when opposition MP Time Kadrijaj hurled an egg, followed by a second, third and fourth, at Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The eggs landed on the wooden floor, shattering into shards that scattered across the benches.

Kurti, who was speaking about the need for additional time to negotiate with other parties before selecting a speaker after the snap election, had a sudden onslaught of eggs in his direction. Once the eggs had been thrown, lawmakers and police officers moved swiftly to restore order, securing Kurti and dispersing the surrounding crowd.

The incident reflects the growing volatility within Kosovo’s recent political landscape. After the June election, the newly formed Alliance party, of which Kadrijaj is a member, has pushed back against the administration’s attempts to solidify its position and is openly challenging the leadership’s decisions.

While this episode was isolated to the political arena, it raises concerns about the continuity of Kosovo’s commitments to climate change mitigation and sustainable development. Effective governance is essential for advancing the country’s environmental agenda, and any further destabilisation could delay critical policy implementation.
