This weekend, mourners gathered at Webster County High School in West Virginia to remember U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old National Guard member who was fatally shot during a tragic incident in Washington, D.C. Beckstrom was remembered as a caring and optimistic individual, greatly admired by her peers and teachers.

Principal Jarrod Hankins shared, “Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a contagious smile, and a positive energy that lifted those around her.” Beckstrom, who graduated in June 2023, enlisted immediately and served as a military police officer.

In the shooting, her colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, sustained serious injuries and is currently in critical condition. Local vigils have been organized in their honor, with community members expressing their grief and support.

The assailant, a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill. This incident has led to heightened security and a reevaluation of U.S. asylum policies, including a halt on decisions concerning asylum applications from individuals traveling with Afghan passports.

Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are still being finalized according to local funeral home details, which are in contact with her family.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey visited Wolfe’s family, acknowledging the difficult times for their community. He emphasized Beckstrom's legacy as one of kindness and courage, stating, “Though her life lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to last forever.”
