LEXINGTON, Neb. — On a cold day following worship at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, parishioners filled the basement, faces etched with worry about the future of their town. A sense of despair settled like the winter chill as they faced the impending closure of Tyson Foods' beef plant, the largest employer in Lexington.
“When they announced there would be no more work, it felt like our world was closing in,” Alejandra Gutierrez shared, one of the many whose livelihood depends on the plant.
The closure, scheduled to take effect on January 20, will put 3,200 employees out of work in a community of just 11,000. Many local businesses, already struggling, are expected to face a downturn as families consider relocation in search of work.
League City Manager Michael Hicks stated, “Losing 3,000 jobs in a town of this size represents a catastrophic closing event.”
Reports predict that the job losses could extend beyond the plant, potentially affecting 7,000 individuals in and around Lexington, creating a financial upheaval that some residents estimate could lead to a loss of $241 million in annual wages and benefits.
The reasons behind the closure stem from Tyson’s need to “right-size” its beef operation amidst historically low cattle herds. They recently reported an anticipated loss of $600 million in production for the upcoming fiscal year. The company has yet to offer a detailed plan on how to mitigate the impact on affected workers.
For many in the local community, this facility represented the heart of their identities and dreams. Parishioners and local leaders are expressing hope that Tyson will offer reparative support as the plant's closure date approaches. “Tyson owes this community a debt, and they hold a responsibility to help lessen the blow,” said City Manager Pepplitsch.
As residents ponder their uncertain futures, many are left asking: where will they go from here? The community’s tight-knit fabric, woven together by diversity and shared ambitions for success, now hangs in the balance as workers wonder what is next when they have only known life within Tyson’s walls.
