Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued an unequivocal apology after remarks made about pop star Kylie Minogue in a podcast interview were deemed inappropriate and disrespectful.
The comment occurred during an appearance on the Bush Deep podcast hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne. When asked to rank celebrities Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore, Albanese answered "Oh, Kylie, clearly," citing that the pop icon "is terrific". The remark was met with swift backlash from political opponents and critics alike.
Members of Parliament, including Community Strong MP Zali Steggall, criticized the comment as "entirely inappropriate" and called for the Prime Minister to demonstrate leadership by calling out sexist language. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson posted on X that the remarks were "disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians and demean the office of Prime Minister."
Albanese's reply, issued early Monday, stated: "I apologise unequivocally for the comments." He also clarified that the comments were made in a casual setting at the official residence in Canberra.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles confirmed that the government remains "utterly committed" to elevating women in society and highlighted that the cabinet currently balances the number of men and women. Marles added that "the government takes seriously the responsibility to model respectful discourse for all Australians".
The incident, though unrelated to environmental policy, illustrates how public leaders' language can impact perceptions of inclusivity—an aspect increasingly considered in sustainable governance frameworks.
