In brief

LA28 organizes a partnership with Archer Aviation to offer innovative travel solutions during the Games, hoping to redefine urban mobility.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is preparing to revolutionize spectator experiences by introducing an air taxi service aimed at alleviating the city’s notorious traffic woes. LA28 has announced a collaboration with Archer Aviation, which intends to deploy a fleet of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to shuttle fans between key venues across the city. The concept of flying taxis has captured imaginations worldwide, although attempts to launch such services have faced significant hurdles. Notably, an air taxi service was planned for the 2024 Paris Olympics but did not receive timely certification from relevant aviation authorities. Similarly, Archer Aviation is still awaiting certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), crucial for beginning commercial operations. The firm’s CEO, Adam Goldstein, expressed optimism for achieving this certification by the end of the year, allowing for flights during the Games.Once operational, the eVTOL taxis would provide a quick 10-20 minute transport option to spectators and tourists, connecting them with major Olympic sites. Although pricing details remain unannounced, Goldstein has indicated a pricing structure comparable to high-end ride-hailing services like Uber. The taxis will be bookable through an app, catering to groups of up to four passengers, and will function similarly to helicopters during take-offs and landings.Archer Aviation’s innovative Midnight aircraft features 12 engines and boasts lower noise and emission levels compared to traditional helicopters. Supported by major players like Boeing and United Airlines, Archer and other eVTOL companies aim to revolutionize urban air travel, surmounting challenges such as battery technology and safety regulations to pave the way for a sustainable transport future.Goldstein envisions the LA28 Games as an opportunity to create a lasting impact on transportation in America. "We want to transform the way people get around Los Angeles," he stated, highlighting the significance of this venture. Meanwhile, the UK is targeting 2026 for its inaugural flying taxi launch, reflecting the global ambition to integrate air taxis into modern transit systems. The upcoming Olympics, which will mark LA's third hosting of the Summer Games, promises an unforgettable experience. With initiatives like the air taxi service, LA28 aims to establish a precedent for future events and travel innovations while navigating the delicate balance of safety, regulation, and urban congestion.
